That phrase (in it’s original form) always reminds me of early translation software from when I was in college in the late ’80s. Researchers fed that phrase into a Russian translator machine and then back into English.
What came back was: “The vodka is fine but the meat stinks.”
February 13, 1633: Galileo arrives in Rome to stand trial for questioning accepted beliefs. I’m sure glad that that kind of thing doesn’t happen anymore.
(Yeah, I’m deliberately trolling. I feel like causing trouble today.)
The original version is, “The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.” It’s Biblical, from Matthew, referring to temptation, which would have made it appropriate here. But since he’s altering the original lyrics from “That’s the way I always heard it would be.”. it’s at least consistent.
Grew up in home dinner out (other than at a relatives house for a holiday dinner) was extremely rare. Husband grew up where they went out for dinner weekly & all holidays – so he likes/expects dinner out. Add into this we live on an extremely small budget (if people we know heard how little we live on they would not believe it) so we eat at lower price end restaurants and most restaurants such as Golden Corral and other chains lower cost end places are not here. (There had been a Golden Corral in the next county a couple of decades ago, but it went out of business.) Even the diners which are the family type restaurants here are going out of business these days.
Before Covid ate out 3 nites a week & lunch at Wendys (for just over US$3) daily. Saturday night dinner (date night) also at Wendys. The other two weekly dinners out were at an Asian buffet, Ikea and/or Chinese takeout.
We have just started back to eating at Wendys a couple of days a week for lunch (late in afternoon so mostly empty) and eating at the Asian buffet for dinner – instead of Friday night as before we either go on Wednesday or Thursday night (pending the weather) so fewer people are there. Been taking out Chinese food again much longer than going out to eat during Covid.
If we ate out once a week, total, it would be too often for me, but he likes to do so, so we eat out.
It has also taken me some 40 years plus years to convince him that, unlike on TV & in movies, when I say I don’t any gifts I mean it – no birthday, no anniversary, no Christmas, no Chanukah, no Valentine day gifts – what a waste of money – and even when he did buy gifts he knew to spend cheap on the gift or it would be going back (and going back maybe even if not cheap)
Both have always worked – first 20 years it was mostly his income, he quit for medical reasons and my income became our main income – now we are each are making little & getting by together.

Almost St. Valentine’s Day. Arlo has to work on those usually reliable party spirits of Janis.
St. Valentine worked hard and gave so much to be recognized as a saint. SWMBO takes offense at modern culture ignoring that.

Can you imagine the grief a husband would have to endure if he told his wife he wasn’t in the “mood” to take her out on Valentine’s Day?

Well, there’s more than one kind of “weakness”… and of “strength”.

Intriguing how many times scripture is referenced or misquoted.

St. Valentine’s Day = Amateur Night. I call it “St. Hallmark Day.” Why wait for anyone to say that tonight’s the night??

It was always so nice when my late husband and I had enough money to go out for a drink and a bit of dinner. I miss that.
