Based on where this storyline seems to be headed and thinking back to Arlo’s “boat scare” (when he got his boat but then decided he was afraid to sail on the ocean), JJ has an underlying theme about finally getting what you always wanted and then realizing it’s not what you want.
(Though, I’d argue that Arlo could have taken some classes and gained knowledge and confidence as a sailor. He didn’t need to drop his dream due to fear.)
I agree with “Murt”, I believe its a reference to Harvey the invisible rabbit. After all, everyone thought Elwood P Dowd was crazy. I also miss Arlo’s boat from long ago. There’s always lots of fun adventures with a boat. Maybe Jimmy will bring it back into the story.
Oh you kids — Harvey (1950 film) Harvey is a 1950 American comedy-drama film starring James Stewart. The story centers on a man whose best friend is Harvey, a 6 ft 3+1⁄2 in tall white invisible rabbit, and the ensuing debacle when the man’s sister tries to have him committed to a sanatorium.
LOL, I was just yesterday thinking of the Bugs Bunny toon in which he gets upset that the bounty for rabbits is so low, and to raise it he goes on a rampage which includes sawing off Florida and setting it adrift, the combined armed forces come after him and he wonders, “Could it be that I’ve taken this thing too far?” There’s a huge explosion, then at the end we see him looking sadly through the bars of a jail, saying, “Eh…. COULD be!”
Oh my god. Why don’t they just buy a vacation home and have done with it? Then they can do the typical Boomer thing and flaunt having a second residence while most people younger than them can’t even afford one home.
I was in a stage production of Harvey once. I do not beleive anyone spoke to the rabbit except for the main character Elwood (Jimmy S in the movie) and he always referred to him as Harvey and never “rabbit”. I like the Bugs Bunny reference!
" J Herskowitz’s music becomes a universal language, allowing listeners to infuse their own emotions, experiences, and narratives into the immersive sonic landscapes." Makes as much sense as any of the other suggestions…
I think they should put the sale of their house on hold and just rent a place for a couple of months to see how it is before making it a permanent move. They are too unsure right now, especially when he is making sure to remind her that she made the conment, not him!!!
I googled this and the answer I got was when you call someone rabbit you are implying they are young, timid, and afraid. I think that fits better than Updike or Bugs.
My husband has planned on moving to Lancaster, PA (as mentioned elsewhere more recently Williamsburg, VA has become an option for him also) since before we were married. so for maybe 50 years.
I know he will regret it and I don’t want to move. Our families are here and we have no children so one day one or another of our niblings will have to help to take care of us and if we move away that will not be available to us. (Currently I figure it will be his younger niece who helps us.) I fell like those people from New England – I was born on this island and I plan on staying here. (Plus we like our doctors and they understand us.)

I’m not sure if that last panel is a reference from Bugs Bunny or John Updike. (Colud be Harvey, I suppose.)

I really can’t relate to these 2 at all. Why does Arlo feel like he shouldn’t be glad to be back home?

We are having a remake of Casablanca, when not even the director knew with whom the girl would go till he had to make the end of the film.
