We had a Black Lab who taught herself how to be a hearing ear dog for my mom. Pax also showed me how to overcome my fear of dogs. I can pet a pit bull now (and watch one of my uncles quietly freak out) any dog without fear. I do ask before petting a dog as they could be in training or a reactive pet.
She was the best dog. Imagine a dog that wants to befriend any indoor cat because they are family. She’d pretend to be asleep and slowly wag her tail so the cat would have a “toy”. This is if the cat wouldn’t let her slowly approach and sniff noses, like my late, lamented Pixel didn’t. He liked playing with her tail. >^^<
I miss her. I think she’d have befriended Monroe easily. He isn’t afraid of anything.
Ever since wolves figured out that humans had “scrapies” (AKA leftovers) and humans figured out that wolves are good early warning systems, trackers and good at keeping away small vermin, we’ve had this symbiotic relationship.
According to an article in Scientific American, dogs were the first animals to be domesticated by man. The authors are not so sure if cats have ever been domesticated.

With our dogs, we refer to it as fur therapy.

Is that why I feel so calm and relaxed typing this with a 55kg Newfie at my feet?
