I’ve found that if I do not eat in accordance with the clock and eat in accordance with my body, I do better.
In other words, if I do not eat until I am hungry and if I stop eating when I stop feeling hungry, I maintain a healthy weight. Also, it takes about 20 minutes for the body to realize that it isn’t hungry anymore, so eat slowly. Yes, this is difficult when your daily schedule is superimposed on your body’s schedule.
Food tastes a lot better when you actually are hungry.
I am fortunate. I do not have a medical condition like hypoglycemia that might make this practice dangerous.
Eating became a habit rather than a necessity. The clock says it’s lunchtime, so eat. I also contend that we are Pavolvian in our eating habits: we get hungry at mealtime whether we are actually hungry or not. Skip the meal and you won’t get hungry until the next meal time. I do NOT recommend this as an ongoing practice.
So next time you reach for that doughnut, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” Then make the decision, “What the heck, I’ll indulge myself THIS time.”
