What if you crash and land on your head? Do you like getting concussions? Crashing a bike is different from falling while walking. The average cyclist goes 15 miles per hour. Walking, on average, is 2 to 5 mph. If you fall while walking, you’ll get some bumps and bruises. If you crash your bike, you’ll get flung off and get worse injuries, especially if you land on your head (depending on how fast you were going, how you landed, and what you landed on, the possibilities range from a concussion to brain trauma, or even death).
Remember, a bike is a vehicle. Walking? You’re okay with no protective gear other than shoes. Driving? You need a seatbelt, no exceptions. Cycling? Helmet. Motorcycle? Helmet and motorcycle clothing. Rollerskating/skateboarding? Helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads.
Cycling is a sport, and sports need safety gear, too! Football players wear helmets and padding because of the rough surface. Baseball players wear batting helmets at home plate because a heavy ball thrown at those speeds will cause significant pain (And by “heavy,” I mean dense. Have you ever held a baseball? They’re as solid as rocks).
I’m not being preachy. It’s common sense. It’s safety, gosh darn it! I don’t care who you are; I don’t want anyone to get hurt!
