Gracie: It's world cup soccer, Tia Carmen. The U.S. vs. England. Tia Carmen: I still think they're going too far. Baldo: Freedom will prevail! Dad: ¡Viva la revolución!
Americans like to be different, we hang onto the things that we feel make us special. Even if it’s football and inches. Nobody said it had to make sense.
This is a rematch of the teams I saw play at Wembley a couple of years ago. To my inexpert eyes we Yanks played creditably but still lost decisively (2-0, if I recall correctly), and the local supporters were quite rude about it, before, during, and after. A certain amount of trash-talk is par for the course, but unless you’re actually at war I think it’s unconscienable to BOO a visiting team’s national anthem (and if you are at war, the game probably wouldn’t be played). “International Friendly” my sweet patootie.
I recall many years ago a home crowd booing the visiting team’s national anthem. It was just after Canada decided not to join the “coalition of the willing” in Iraq, and it was an American crowd booing the Canadian anthem.
I’m not saying that was the first time that ever happened, I’m just saying it cuts both ways.
NoBrandName, I would consider that unconscienable too.
I probably couldn’t bring myself to cheer “Deutschland Uber Alles” because of past associations, but I wouldn’t boo it (unless I found myself watching a Nazi march).
Ahhh! Excellent! Baldo and Papi looked so cool to be drama kings!
Gweedo, that word “micturate” is new to me so I had to look up in the dictionary via the Internet and was surprised what it means. Oh my goshhh! Shame on you! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Did you micturated in your pant yet? LOLs! X-D
Just kidding!
W6BXQ, I know OF that song, but don’t know how it goes…
Again, I think that booing the visiting team when the lineup is announced (especially their star players) is one thing: it’s gamesmanship, part of establishing homefield advantage, etc. But booing their anthem is different – it’s personal, it’s contrary to the very spirit of international sport – and I think it would likely be a very effective in motivating them to defeat you…
(The flipside of my reaction to “Deutschland…” is that I can’t help being deeply moved by “La Marseillaise”, and I don’t even like the French. It’s the best national anthem ever, IMO…)

…or it could be due for an encore next January, at least the first two lines.
Say what you will, Jerry’s an interesting guy…
