Gracie: Papi, can someone be too smart for their own good? Dad: Gracie, being smart... well... it takes a lot of brains! Dad: You're looking for a smarter answer, huh? Gracie: To prove some sort of genetic link, yeah.
Lewreader: let’s put it this way. Hard working Ben Franklin worked harder when people were looking and Honest Abe was especially honest when it suited him (according to some lore).
The best rule of thumb I ever heard was, “Before you say anything, ask yourself four questions: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it helpful? Is it kind? Go ahead and say it only if all four answers are honestly yes.”
Personally, I’ve found it’s also the hardest rule of thumb to follow. :|

Yes…you have to be smart enough to know when to keep your mouth shut…

She seems to be failing at being smart. And if she doesn’t listen carefully, she’ll miss the boat on that wisdom thing too!

Being smart isn’t the same as being wise. She’s got the smarts but not the wisdom yet.
