Rayna has an immunodeficiency disease. According to what I read, parts of her immune system aren’t working. Or since she has to stay inside all the time, it might be even worse. You may remember David Vetter. He was born without an immune system and had to spend his whole life inside a sterile bubble. He couldn’t have any direct contact with air outside the bubble and any visitors who came by had to communicate with him from outside the bubble. He got a bone marrow transplant from his sister, but it failed and he died at the age of 12 or 13.

I had forgotten the exact problem she had, but I know that the body can do strange things, come down with bizarre autoimmune conditions or other problems, or reverse seemingly incurable ones.
