Remember the purpose of journalism is to make money so the purveyor doesn’t go out of business and the paycheck gets cut off. Journalist bash corporations while drawing a paycheck from one because that is what sells.

Writing things that your readers like and agree with is easy, if you know your market.

Writing hard truths and uncovering unpleasant facts, honest journalism is the most difficult to write. You aren’t writing to please an audience but to enlighten them – and sometimes education is a painful experience.

    .

People want the facts to fit their preconceptions.

When they don’t, then they alter the facts to fit.

I once had a weekly newspaper – it would be a blog today. In its seven issue career, it uncovered two scandals. The first that federal civil defense money was being diverted to a “Christian anti-communist” group for their own propaganda under the government’s name. It was stopped. The second that the local political machine was fomenting a riot when the schools were integrated. There would then be a show trial and that would be used as as precedent against the civil rights movement. One lone sucker who couldn’t get his cross lit didn’t seem worth a show trial, so the scheme was dropped in favor of blockbusting stable integrated neighborhoods which did succeed.

Sounds like a Democrat newspaper. I’m reminded of the truism that everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.

Thanks. That didn’t even get into the mayor, King Eric the Arrogant, who would look down his nose, past his curled lip, at any mere citizen appearing before the City Council.
