Gosh… Clara and Claude were more ahead of the game than I thought.
I didn’t have a modem that could go online until 1999, a year after them.
It was very slow, compared to what other parts of town could get….
but at least I didn’t have to listen to the screeches and howls of connecting via dial-up.
Hmmm …. maybe Nighthawks was trying not to spoil future re-run potential, by making the past too recent.
When I still had four years of dial-up ahead of me.
1998.
It sounds recent, to me…. but I still had a very used 386 computer, running Windows 3.1…
The next year I got Windows 98, and the internet on a 56K modem….. but my first cell phone wouldn’t arrive for almost another 10 years.
I do know I was behind the curve…. but it all sounds positively ancient!
Oh…. and Liverlips… don’t worry…. I’m sure you’ll do fine…
IF that’s what it’s about. And I hope not.

DSL was late to my neighborhood… I finally got to sign up in 2006…. only 12 years ago….It was very slow, compared to what other parts of town could get….

I mean, when this strip is rerun (again) in 2022, “20 years ago” will be 2002…When I still had four years of dial-up ahead of me.
1998.
