Just to let those of you who were wondering, the ole Capt. came away unscathed from Saturday’s horrendous 7.8 earthquake, here in Ecuador.
Although, like every good pirate .. eh.. smuggler ..um.. entrepreneur in the import export trade, I live on the coast,Machala, the Banana Capital of the World, is the furthest city/seaport south. The epicenter of the quake was far to the north of us in Esmeraldas and spread out from there. While we felt enough of the initial shock to make me a little more unstable than I already am, we were fortunate not to sustain any damage or loss of life – unlike our unfortunate neighbors in Guayaquil and upwards along the coast in Bahia, Puerto Vija, Manabi, Manta and many other cities.
I said on another post but it bears repeating. The people of Ecuador are resilient and face adversity head on – mas duro, mas fuerza ! They won’t give up, although many have lost everything, including family – which is everything ! They will rebuild and go on, with the grit and determination, that makes them so outstanding. Viva Ecuador !
For those of you so inclined, a little prayer for these courageous folks couldn’t hurt.
