My sweet little girls (Brooklynites) get comments like that from people they meet nationwide. But only there, not here at home in NYC.
Harping on stereotypes isn’t really fun, except when you know that there’s a little ambiguity about where the truth lies. NYC has fewer guns and a lot less crime than most places, but it does have its hot spots, and if you get lost (or if you’re a drug addict) you may just find yourself in them … and it can be amusing to remind certain visitors of that. Likewise, I can get teased in the Adirondacks about getting eaten by their bears or fleeced/stranded by their mountain guides, or ribbed in Texas about getting hogtied by drunken cowboys or executed by wild-eyed meth-lab operators.
America is a land of endless opportunity, and it takes encounters like this for us to notice that!
