The only time I’ve (knowingly) had rabbit was in Basic Training, down in Georgia. It was prepared like fried chicken, and my platoon-mates from the Northern states wouldn’t believe it when ones from the Southern states told them it was rabbit. (Actually, maybe it WAS chicken, and them Southern boys was messin’ with our Yankee minds…)
When I was growing up, my mother would buy rabbits occasionally from a woman in town who raised and butchered them herself. We had rabbit for dinner many times - we were on the low end of the economic scale, and rabbit was inexpensive.
Hard to believe now, but we also had many abalone dinners, because IT was inexpensive commercially. How times change…
