Ha! I’m 67 and I have only seen a railroad handcar in real life once. Of course, I grew up with them appearing in cartoons along with hobos and their bindles a few times per year. I guess that the great depression left memorable symbols of the era. I wonder what the enduring symbols of the great recession will be? A stack of foreclosures? Bankers with pockets stuffed with bailout bonuses (instead of the 1930 images of Wall Street brokers jumping from buildings)?
My milkman did have a horse, though that was unusual. At least I was born too late to have to hand-crank an automobile. Yay.
