However, when I was there (about 7-8 years ago), I don’t remember them talking about the bird once and had forgotten about it entirely. All the talk I heard was about the possum which had been introduced by the British??/Australians?? a hundred or so years earlier and had inundated the island. (The NZ possum is more like a mink rather than the North American possum). Another case of introducing a species with no natural predator. Maybe it is the possum that is eating the Kiwi eggs. I don’t remember.
Skulker, you’re thinking about Australia’s rabbit problem. The Aussie possum is native, not imported, and no threat to the ecosystem. (They’re also MUCH cuter than nasty, icky American possums; what a difference a furry tail makes…)
Ah, OK, I misread “island”. I know hedgehogs are causing problems in New Zealand, but wasn’t aware of the possums. There are so many invasive species causing trouble IN Australia that I couldn’t process a species FROM Australia being trouble elsewhere…

Is this the end of the Apteryx? Who’s going to accompany John the Tortoise on his annual winter trips South?

Oop! And that’s how the last one went; as the butt of a joke.

sorry Sheik but you got the wrong bird. John is accompanied by a bird that can fly, which the apteryx can’t.

Fritzoid, I think Skulker’s right. The possum is native to Australia, but introduced to, and a problem in, New Zealand.

Wolfie would get fat if he eat lawyers instead. One should sustain him a month and help mankind as well.
pawpawbear over 14 years ago
Oh no, not lawyers. They are highly toxic and also may litigate all over the unsuspecting wolf.
