The invention of the internet really did away with a lot of testers/QA positions. Many software companies now have a very small QA department and rely on the end user to find bugs. Then they release online updates without much testing.
Many of my friends and myself back in the day were going to be video game testers, software testers, several moved to silicon valley or Seattle only to move back after the internet bugs were worked out and they were down sized.
The company I work for these days has 1 person in QA then they have employees do a bug bash and rely on the end user to find problems with an auto update system to push out fixes when they correct them.
There was a time in my life where I worked as a volunteer counseling people in careers in IT. I had people who really thought that they could make 6 figures to stay at home and test video games.
I hate those IT “help” forums. Takes me 3-5 hours to find the info I need and that’s on a good day. Its really nice that end users want to point out errors, bugs and fixes. But it is really hard to find the answers – and how am I to know if a post from 2-3 years ago is still viable?

Angelfiredragon…on that premise, maybe car companies let the end-users find the bugs, and then they’d fix them after?

Yes, and when you retire – if you retire – you can be an on-line comics commenter…
