Negative space is when the space between objects in a picture make another identifiable shape. Classic example is the picture of two faces where their profiles make the shape of a vase between them.
Some of these comments are great. I wish GoComics offered Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down buttons on the comments so other commenters could agree or disagree with them.
@sbwertz“Negative space is when the space between objects in a picture make another identifiable shape.”.Not really. It can sometimes be used that way, but negative space is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image..That which is not subject is negative space.
So all-in-all, what does negative space have to do with cave paintings? Anything in particular? What’s the joke? Are cave paintings a historical record, or an attempt at art?

I looked up negative space once. It’s one of those things that I think I understand while I’m reading the explanation.
