One of my son’s teachers gave his class an exam during the last period of his last day of high school. They Pham already taken the final – she just didn’t want them to slack off.
My daughter’s middle school gives incoming 6th graders a homework packet to do over the summer. In typical form, my daughter was psyched to get it, and stretched it out over the summer.
This is a bit off the theme, but I remember having to deal with the dreaded high school condition “Senioritis.”.We imagined it as a challenge for Marcus Welby, M.D. in his last television season (this surely dates me, doesn’t it?). .The third to the last episode, Dr. Welby would find the cure for Cancer. The second to the last episode, Dr. Welby would cure Death. The last episode of the series, Dr. Welby would, after great difficulty, triumphantly find the cure to Senioritis..Sorry, I don’t remember what it was, besides ultimately just Graduation.
My high school back in the day had finals up till the day everyone was signing yearbooks, usually would be 25% of your grade and if you missed it unable to make up. Add to the fact that tardy’s or sluffing class was 8 hours of community service per offense in order to graduate.
Of course the later generations have complained that citizenship should have nothing to do with knowledge and graduation, so they removed the community service and now one can graduate from high school while still failing citizenship. Is it no wonder people don’t work well with others as much these days?
Homework is a schools way of saying they don’t have time to finish the curriculum in normal hours. Kids should not be given homework, they are only kids once and for a short time, let them enjoy it!
