This was a thing back before WWII. Companies would send their products to people and bill them. To avoid payment, all you had to do was mail the product back. This was outlawed.
They ring his bell to delivery orders? They don’t throw the package at the foot of the driveway? When we order things that is what they do – though since the pandemic the few things we ordered were mostly left on the front steps – an entire 15 feet further for them to walk. We live on a 4 lane main road across the street from a bus stop and anything left here is OBVIOUS. And yes, I have seen deliverymen throw the package out of a moving truck at our property.
We had stopped ordering anything we could otherwise buy decades ago. I had a $500 package of bolts of fabric (in 1980s dollars) left standing on my driving way behind my husband’s car – they did not ring the bell and he must have been home or he drove the box of fabrics. I stopped a deliveryman when I happened to walk out while he was delivering it and he was walking away. I complained he did not ring the bell – he told me that he did not have to do so for anything being delivered to an individual only deliveries to business names- I pointed out to him that it was being delivered to business (corporate) name – he shrugged. Then there was husband’s insulin – temperature sensitive. Did not want to buy by delivery but insurance company insisted – it would come next day Fed Ex and we would need to sign for it – it would not be left. No, it sat 2 days in their warehouse, then came by 2 day USPS. Then it was left our front steps in 90F+ heat without even ringing the bell – it was worthless!
We do get deliveries though – for other people, some so far away from us that husband, who has lived in our area since he was 7 years old, has never heard of the street on the label.

Will those ads tell how I can afford that shopping without going into debt?

I’m reminded of that story (later debunked by Medium) about Target knowing a girl was pregnant before her father did.

I often get targeted ads after I’ve bought something, telling me I might be interested in the very thing I’ve just bought. Numpties

Why I don’t check out the ads including scary medical ones, that pop up no matter what is on the screen.

When I empty my SPAM box there is usually one or two “Order Confirmation – Delivery suspended” notifications. I haven’t placed any orders.

If they send orders based on what I’m thinking, I should be getting something from Victoria’s Secret any day now.

That is more than believable. After all, that is what some using the power of the government are doing.

Companies still try it, though.
