They are the unwritten comments, of course you can’t read them.

People try changing them all the time. An empty theater but a stranger insists on sitting either directly in front of you, next to you, or behind you.

Two empty seats on the subway and a commuter decides to place their purse, bags, etc on the seat next to them while other people have to stand for the whole ride.

My husband and I get this one all the time. The parking lot is full of cars but as we approach our car someone in the car next to us picks that exact second to open the doors to get their groceries in the car or strap in their kids and generally take all day while we’re waiting to get into our car. We can’t get by them with their doors open. We’ll look around and see no one else is getting in or out of their car, just us and the people next to us. This happens all the time.

If they are not written then the only way to change them is to get a majority of people to agree to the change.

BTW, that is really what “Seinfeld” was about. It was not about “nothing” like they claim but about the unwritten rules of society and breaking them. George seemed to have actually written down most of the rules.

sad if we have to write common sense. It means we stopped being rational

The “unwritten rules” these days are like those little toy race car tracks: you just keep adding on at will to change the configuration.

To be honest, I’ve always wondered this too. I seem to break most of the unwritten rules without even realising it.
