Have to chime in about yesterday, cos I couldn’t get to GoComics…
I just read those comments, where everybody seemed to be agreeing that Betty was nasty and Bub should leave her…
I couldn’t believe it!
That’s the strip where she said she did settle for ordinary once, but she “was kind of in love.”
She had a sly expression on her face… and to me, she was obviously joking!
Betty is funny.
Bub knows that… he gets her humor, and they seem to get along very well.
Yes, she can be pushy and sometimes lectures him… real people do that.
But he tends to ignore it, and she’s OK with that.
She rolls her eyes at his foibles, too.
The comics, and the comments, as many have noted over the years, are bad at expressing sarcasm or facetiousness.
If you listened to the way many couples tease each other, you might realise that it would look horrible in print, but in actual speech, with a twinkle in the eye, it’s funny.
Commenters do the same thing on “Pickles”, another strip where a couple teases each other.
These are comic strips… the default reaction should be to think it’s meant to be humorous.
Do you and a close friend or spouse never say horrid things, but obviously in jest?
I know I do!
It’s just hard to represent in print… but Bub knows Betty loves him.
