He’s out of line, but he’s right. But then, winter hangs on well into spring. And summer will often hold out well into fall, too.

At around the calendar’s start of Fall, Mr. Peirce commented on GoComics for the first time in years and said that he was working on this exact comic. So our wait for this comic throughout the calendar’s Fall has come full circle!

PS: I don’t think I’ve seen a Big Nate character with pink hair before (girl in panel 5 (minus Nate-drawing panel))

That’s not the case where I live. Just a few weeks ago in Grand Rapids the temperature spiked down to 18 degrees

I agree, though. That’s why people stop wearing white shoes after Labor Day. (It’s unofficially Fall!)

I agree with Nate on how the whole summer thing doesn’t start til school’s out. Yes sir Nate. I also just like this whole conversation carrying about on their way to school.

Winter solstice – 21st December – is mid-winter, not the start of winter.

I’m one to agree with Nate here. My gut leans more on Winter unofficially beginning after Thanksgiving, Fall beginning at the start of school, Spring at the start of March, and Summer at June 1st.

    It’s body Clockwork

My brain always says winter starts the DAY after Thanksgiving

Snow is what I’m thankful for (NOT)

It’s meteorological winter, is that not correct?

    Either way, it’s cold.

Re COLLEEN R: Any druid can tell you, winter is from Souls’ Day (pray the harvest will last, lest we join our ancestors who were less lucky [better throw them a party, you could join them soon]) to Groundhogs {thank the gods! we found meat!}, & it’s Midsummer’s Night, between when most of the world has Labor Day (end planting) to when the U.S. does (start harvesting). ♫In the Summer time, when the weather is fine♫ better watch your flock, because the predators also have young to feed. Midpoints shifted a bit as druids lost control to commercial calendar sales. Keep the equinox & solstice, because that’s just science, like moon phases, but they’re not holidays, we’re not some silly superstitious druids. 8 annual, well spaced community feasts wasn’t their worst idea.

Claiming seasons begin on solstice or equinox is bit arbitrary when no season really seems to start then anywhere on the globe.

That’s right! When you’re a kid, summer starts the moment school lets out for summer vacation, and ends at bedtime on the day before the first day of school. (Now, it starts on the first day that it’s warm enough for me to go for my morning run without a shirt, and ends on the first morning that I have to put one on!)
