I recall the age of non-friction. I and others stopped picking it up. The piles grew. No one would take it for free. Eventually developed were shelves tilted back and to the middle. Requiring more support, less storage space was available. Gradually more non-friction was thrown away. As time passed fewer people bought it. Nowadays the results of the experiments we funded, bring us flat non-friction discs and rectangles used for moving furniture and other heavy/awkward items.

Totally different problem. This one was to hold all the books together in the bookcase.

I complained about the mess, but the librarian let it slide.

It’s only tilted books, like the ones in the second bookcase that would not stand up if friction were removed.

Science friction.

It’s easy to think of friction as a nuisance, but life without it would be pretty impossible.

Most of those nonfriction books require a magnetfrying glass to read them anyhow.
