My sister used to have two dogs I would take for walks in the woods. One of them would dutifully stay on the trail and stay within my sight. The other would take off in any direction he pleased, return to the trail soaking wet, covered in mud, disappear again, and would be waiting for me at the house when I got back.
Lighten up dude, If the dog isn’t on a leash, let them go where they please. They will still beat you home in the end.
We have two kinds of walks for our dogs. People walks where they walk next to us without any tugging at the leash and “Sniffy” walks where they are on 30’ retractable leashes and they are free to go where ever and as far as the leash will let them. Since we have a nature preserve a few blocks away they get both walks in one. When we are walking down the sidewalk they are next to us, once we get into the nature preserve they know they are free to explore. They always sleep well after these walks.

Sometimes Stella flat out refuses to go the way I’m going. Often it means our walk is over or we’re going somewhere else.

Caution… Treacherous cliff edge for Selfies. It lures you in with the best Wifi in the woods.

Really good scenery, and the birch tree is perfect. I especially like the lines of trees as windbreaks in the distance.

We had a dog that would reluctantly follow about 30 ft behind walking away from our campsite and about 30 ft ahead on the way back.
