I was walking my dachshund on a coastal trail when I heard a loud rapid fluttering of feathers from above. A large hawk came directly down out of the sky and pounced on a small rabbit about 12 feet away from us. My dog and I looked at each other and I said what she thought, “That could have been you.”

Not so much “where is Delia?” as “who is Delia?”

If that’s really a turkey vulture, then something else got to Delia first.

    Gasp! Awful!

I have huge HAWKS who dive down and kill mourning doves and eat them in my yard and another time attacked a baby skunk, killed him and flew off!

No worries, turkey vultures are ground feeders of dead animals, they don’t kill.

We had a Red Tailed Hawk swoop down on one of our elderly Corgis while she was on our deck. I came out of the back door as it was coming down and it peeled off. Natasha was 15 years old and a bit arthritic, but her jaws and teeth were in top working order. She was also a big Corgi at about 32 lbs.

Bird would have gotten an unpleasant surprise.

Not funny – it happens. Not with vultures, but with raptors. Small pets are never safe.

As a rule, Turkey Vultures don’t carry anything. Now a California Condor is twice as big as a turkey vulture but has the underwing white stripe in the front, rather than along the back of the wing. They could probably carry a small creature. I have seen a California Condor cruising the foothills above Morro Bay – but only the one time.

Dark humor is an acquired taste. Like most humor, the laugh, though a nervous one, comes from the shock and surprise at the sudden change of direction. Still an acquired taste though. Not for all of us.

T V would be incapable of carrying off a dog. Even an eagle would find it challenging.

Bit of an error by Bliss. Very unlikely to be a turkey vulture, mainly eaters of carrion. As others have stated, much more likely to be an eagle, and would still have to be a very light dog. Large hawks would normally stick to smaller prey, like rabbits, mice…or a kitten. Or a very teeny tiny dog. Still, it’s just a comic.
