Opus, why create a flap about a flap? Next you’ll be belly aching that you can’t plug your headphones in. Try to get interested in something (or someone) live. Much better than all the gadgets.
I sometimes wonder the same thing. And the design puts an extra layer of fabric right where you don’t need it. Especially in summertime. Those things were put out there to keep them cool, and then we go and double wrap them. We’re all….. uh, ……. nuts.
Yeah the flap is a weird idea. Even boxes sometimes have flaps, why? I always look for underwear without a silly flap, sometimes my ding dong gets caught in the thing, and I have to get it out, it feels weird…..My girlfriend does love boxer shorts, loose fitting especially strutting around the house,…..Try boxer shorts, girls.
I just recently discovered merino wool undies. Hard to find in briefs, though. And no, they are not hot. They are much more comfortable than cotton in this sauna called Georgia.
The flap isn’t intended as an exit. It is designed that way so that varying ‘package’ sizes can be accommodated in the same waist size. It is a flawed idea for standardization.
This isn’t about the flap. It’s about not knowing what to do with yourself after you’ve gotten something that you’ve obsessed about getting for months. He obsesses about the first thing he sees (his underwear) a few seconds after obtaining the object of his desire. Then he gets a new obsession in the last panel.
Certainly the whole point of today’s strip is the obsession we always have with the latest new thing, even though it’s of questionable value. I mean, is a new iphone REALLY that much better than the last iteration? Does it deserve all the media hype it gets?

Actually, Opus, they do serve a purpose, at least for male humans. Can’t speak for male penguins, of course…

Sometime during the run of Outland, briefs became an icon of male culture in Bloom County. As did sofas.
