You know, I think the Civil War would’ve ended amicably with mutual surrender if Bloom County had been around back then … and it would take that long only because there was no internet to publish it fast.
Can’t remember where I read or heard that in Abe’s ascent through the senate and house that the political climate was one where demeaning your adversaries was considered good sport. Abe excelled to the point where he was challenged to a duel. Shortly thereafter, he decided to end such shenanigans. Mark Twain’s commentary on contemporaneous politicians would play well with current day late night talk show hosts. I am not sure to be heartened that we survived this long or be upset that we really haven’t moved that much forward in 150 years.
