Except current cosmology indicates an open universe, so instead of collapsing back in upon itself, we’ll suffer the heat death of the universe…

Atheism ≠ nihilism. You don’t need an invisible man in the sky telling you what to do to have hope and morals.

There IS still the here and now… and, Oliver, did you mention that cataclysm is BILLIONS of years in the future? (Not to mention that many cosmologists have abandoned the “Big Crunch” and seem to favor the “Big Dark” where everything keeps running away from itself? Dark Matter, y’know…)

It’s my understanding that Buddhist’s are atheists, i.e., they don’t worship god, yet they’re very moral.

habfan40, global reduction in the use of CFCs may have helped heal the hole in the ozone layer.

@habfan40Perhaps you should investigate before you write again. Here’s a hint: banned CFCs, use of non-halide refrigerants, and politicians listening to experts and putting aside partisan politics.

Would that the same thing would happen as a response to the current (much worse) environmental crisis.

This is an old comic. Like many things in science, theories change. The current science indicates that there won’t be a “Big Crunch”. The universe will continue to expand.

Then at some point the force that holds atoms together becomes too weak. Lastly, the universe will just be made up of free floating protons an electrons.

We’ll see what science comes up with next year.

OK, Woody, you’re right, what’s the use? However, it just seems more circularly logical that there will be a “Big Crunch” so that there can be yet another “Big Bang”.

Science marches on: we now know the universe is just gonna keep expanding & becoming ever cooler, with all structure decaying, until there’s nothing left but a virtually-empty sea of electrons and photons. As for your hair, Opus: definitely lose the mousse.

Thanks, BluePumpkin, for the gentle correction. The point is well taken. I should’ve added that practicing Buddhists et al are moral. Cats and dogs are amoral and I trust them more than most humans, except when I leave my ham sandwich lying around unattended.

Retro strips do have some problems. It was years later that it was confirmed the universe is expanding and will go out in a cold whimper rather than a cataclysmic collapse. Funny anyway.
