I read somewhere that the stereotype of goats eating tin cans originated around the turn of the last century. Before recycling and giving lip service at any rate to the environment, in rural areas, people just tossed the fairly newly invented tin cans in a ravine or somewhere convenient. Goats were seen to be apparently chewing on the cans but were really after the last bits of material they could smell inside. Sounds plausible. Can’t attest to it because it was before my time. Just barely.

Goats eat labels off of tin cans but no goat, outside a cartoon, has ever actually eaten a tin can.
