So I guess it may be up next, for afterowl, it should be tOWL’d sooner or later, for new readers need the knOWLedge about HOO oh HOO is this Wicket the wicked.

Georgia posted this yesterday and I"m reposting for those who missed it. The explanation of Mag’s “crown” and her liking for raccoons. "It is meant to be a flat, light galvanized metal ring (I had assumed likely from a tire or electrical box or the like), with five clothespins clipped to it. It is based on a ring seen in my childhood in a pile of something or other, that was played with in a similar way. Now that a pie ring has been mentioned, I wonder if that’s what it was. I adore the idea of it being a pie ring! In my mind, it is the raccoons’ crown, which operates more like a scrap metal halo. They wear it clipped to their shoulder guards and pass it onto their successors.

Old Mag was originally Princess Magnet, mentioned in the racccoon/opossum wars briefly in October 2019. She was the heir to her father, Great Boot, and took over during a period of great upheaval for the raccoons. She’s a war queen, but with an influence very similar to England’s Queen Elizabeth I for the raccoons. She is very shrewd, guarded, suspicious, and concentrated solely on the raccoons and their forest-advancement. (The raccoons have a long, rich history, which at the moment is mostly only known to me, but helps when I write them… I like them a lot, lol!)"

Today is:

International Bacon Day —Yes, I know we’ve had a bacon day before, but as Heinlein said, “anything worth doing is worth doing to excess” —especially bacon!

National Cheese Pizza Day —It’s a nice start, but it needs bacon …Seriously, cheese pizza can be very good if it has enough Parmesan and Romano cheese. So many second rate pizzarias leave them out, or don’t put enough in. It’s not about the mozzarella, the blandest of cheeses.

National Be Late for Something Day —Just not for bacon or pizza! Use the time to appreciate things you normally take for granted, which of course does not include bacon or pizza.

National Hummingbird Day —You may wonder what all that high pitched twittering around the feeder is about. All you have to know is that the polite greeting in Hummingbird is: “Let’s you and me fight!” They are extremely pugnacious. I wonder why no one has named a combat helicopter after the bird: small, very fast, and not afraid of anyone.

International Vulture Awareness Day —No, not the ones in suits, following the ambulance, the good ones who are part of nature’s clean-up crew. Unlike the ambulance chasing kind, they are pretty ugly up close, but both are beautiful in full flight …

National Shrink Day —No, not a diet fad. This day honors the quacks who keep you from quacking up. In their defense, the “sciences” of psychology and brain chemistry are still really in gestation—infancy is a way off, yet, and the good shrinks will admit it. That does not denigrate what they are trying to do: keep people functioning in an insane world, or return them to functionality. There should be no stigma attached to the need, or for getting, good psychological or psychiatric help when it is needed. This is particularly true of former or present members of the military, medical personnel, and first responders.

Finally, it is World Beard Day —I’m talking about a proper beard, properly cared for, not the disgusting “haven’t shaved for a week look” that seems so popular. Human beard hair has the point hardness of copper wire. Who wants to kiss or hug a wire brush? Gents, take a page from the ladies: If you want to have a beard, it takes time and a lot of work. It is, however, worth it. You will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer. I can back that up with fifty-three years of experience, and it’s soft as a cat’s fur. Just ask Waffle, who likes to tuck his head under it.

I- er, Smalls can’t take it anymore! GIVE US AN ENDING!

Trixie Update:

She is trying so hard, giving it her all. Trixie WILL retain her feral street cred.

Uhhhh….no. To start with she has taken to sleeping on the bed with us, for at least part of the night. No, it has NOTHING to do with the opportunity for rubbies. She can’t help it if us big dumb humans are there providing perfect and convenient terrain features to rest against.

And then there is the “Oh, fancy meeting you here. Ow about some rubbies, eh wot?” thing going on. She still spends a lot of time in the kitchen. She has staked out one of the breakfast bar chairs. I tell you, it is just amazing. I walk into the kitchen and she just happens to be standing in my path. “Oh, fancy meeting you here.” EVERY TIME. Look up, turn coyly (ignore ignore ignore) but don’t move out of the way.

There is a rubbie toll to be paid. Or brushing. Yeah, that’s okay too. If I bypass her, like on the way to the fridge, an amazing thing happens. She appears from around the other side of the island, in my path again. Very nonchalant. “Oh. You again? Well, since you’re here.”

If I somehow make it into the kitchen without her knowing ahead of time, there will be a cat landing on floor “thump”. And within moments Trixie comes strolling out from around the breakfast bar. “Oh, I didn’t see you. Well, since you’re here.”

Big bad feral puss. Yeah. Right.
