Hmm. Interesting little mounds can be seen through the window. Inquiring minds want to know: Are they mountains? Molehills? Something more sinister?

Maybe we should have a neighborhood roving reporter check it out. Tommy?

Maybe we should have a bookstore cat do some research on these mysterious objects. Beatrix?

Of course, we must solve the riddle of The Trash first, it’s much closer to home.

    Elvis. Elvis, no.

…eh, you know what, go ahead and find out. Just remember, you’re on camera, and Burt’s highlight reel is forever.

I avoid this entire saga by using an under sink trash can. Sure they may still wonder, but out of site is almost out of mind for a cat. Sometimes, if you’re lucky.

Loaner Cat has never been interested in the trash unless Murphy Dobe got into it first. He only did it a couple times before we got a Simple Human Step On Can. One of those big, stainless steel ones. We brought it home and he studied it for a few days, watching us as well until he figured out that if he stood on the pedal, the lid popped up. He’d get so excited though, as soon as the lid popped up, he’d dance around the kitchen and down would go the lid! He’d stand there and stare at the can in confusion, try the pedal again and the whole thing would become a vicious cycle for him, poor thing. Never did figure it out but oh, it was fun to watch.

Perhaps an interview with Old Mag will satisfy the cats’ curiosity. I’m sure the actual plotline will be more convoluted and entertaining, but hopefully the raccoons will enter in somewhere.

I had friends whose dog fished an avocado pit out of the trash. When told to put it down, she did, down her throat. The vet said the pit would kill her so she had to have surgery. Yep, trash needs a dog tight cover.

    Billy Joel: Honesty

If you search for a place to nap

    It isn’t hard to find

There’s always the Big Red Couch or the floor

But if you want to find out about trash

You might as well commit a crime

The bin is sealed and no one knows what its for!

    …….

Honestly, it all seems so absurd

The Humans have something to hide!

Honestly, the rumors we have heard!

Open that bin, what is inside?

    …….

    We can go exploring

    And running through the hall

When we get the zoomies once again

    But when investigating,

We just can’t figure out at all

What the Humans hide in that trash bin!

    …….

Honestly, it all seems so absurd

The Humans have something to hide!

Honestly, the rumors we have heard!

Open that bin, what is inside?

    …….

    I can look for bacon

    I can look for ham

    But where is old spaghetti?

    Is it in that can?

We have tuna water again and again,

    I know, I know

    …….

    When we do investigating

    Don’t be too concerned

We won’t do much damage as we run

Well, maybe Lupin and Ora Zella

Will tear the place to shreds

That’s a fact you can depend upon!

    …….

Honestly, it all seems so absurd

The Humans have something to hide!

Honestly, the rumors we have heard!

Open that bin, what is inside?

It isn’t so much that they don’t want you to cover it as they don’t want you to cover the floor with it.

I really like the perspective change – we’re looking up from the floor at Elvis (and the sky? thru the window) and then we move “up” (with Puck?) and are looking head on at Elvis and Puck (and see the yard thru the window).

My trash cans are under the kitchen and bathroom sinks for a reason: one of our long-ago cats liked to nap in the trash cans. And one day she emerged from her nap with a wad of used chewing gum stuck in her fur. One of the kids had quite an adventure degumming the cat.

(Which is why, even now, I always wrap my used gum in the wrapper it came in before I throw it away. You never know with cats what they’ll manage to get into.)

My Luna insists on emptying all small trash bins in the house. We resorted to buying a lidded bin for our main bath. In the guest bath, the bin is in the cabinet under the sink. Otherwise I would find used tissues and q-tips all over the house.

I have had few mice or roaches since I started to keep my food scraps in an organics bag in my fridge and wipe my dishes with a used napkin and toss them in it too. It’s important to keep the place as free of scraps and such as possible since I have neighbors who suffer from dementia and brain damage.

I had a chicken pot pie for dinner the other night. While there didn’t seem to be any residue on the paper pie holder, my cat kept going to the trash to take it out. He would eat the paper if I didn’t prevent it. I finally had to put it in a plastic baggie and then throw it into the trash.
