I was cooking the other day and using my infrared thermometer to check the pan temp. I inadvertently let the red dot stray to the floor and Gracie POUNCED on it. Thus began a game of kill the red dot, which also delayed our supper. Very useful gadget, if you don’t get sidetracked playing with the cat.
Interesting the variety of feline responses you can get to the red dot. For example, Keeper (my avatar over there <—), would chase it all night, especially if you occasionally substituted something he could actually grab ahold of. Minga, a neighbor’s cat who decided she would rather live with us, usually acted like she couldn’t even see the red dot. She pretty much ignored it. Chessene, our crabby old lady, was afraid of the red dot. She would just back away from it. She wanted nothing to do with it.
One of my friends would always get a present for me and one for Jasper for my birthday and Christmas. One year she got the red dot for Jasper, but I only used it once. It seemed more like a mean trick or practical joke. His favorite toys were furry, feathery things at the end of stretchy bands on a stick and jingle balls.
Loaner Cat must feel she’s above Mr Red Dot. She ignores it with every fiber of her being. Murphy, on the other hand, would chase Mr Red Dot for hours! We couldn’t even say the words let alone pick it up and he was already spinning. Having a 110 pound Doberman spinning in circles in the living room, chasing a red dot, and barking his fool head off at it while he chased it, was a sight to behold. But he fell over too soon all the time because he put his everything into it and that took a toll at his age. Loaner Cat would just sit on her aloof perch on the couch and judge him.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, both alive and in Heaven. I miss you, Dad and Paul.
OT: i got the kittens out of the boxspring and into a proper box and they are frisking about, much to Mouse’s chagrin. I have found homes for all but one of them. I’m going to try to talk my daughter into taking it.
Tabith-Isis: There are a lot of different types of red dots. They each have their unique use. For example, these squishy ones are strawberry candies. Have one.
Ora Z: Thank you. They are delicious.
Tabs: And these hard ones are used in slingshots. I only had to use them once, when Amen-Thief and Azibo were still highway cats. Now that they sell spi… you-know-what I don’t need them as much.
Ora Z: And what about these crumbly ones?
Tabs: I collect them for Elvis, he uses them to make red ink.
Ora Z: I have to write all this down. Alright “Dots.”

We recently had a new attorney join our firm. His initials are BPH. It kind of startles me every time I see it on the calendar because all I can think is “Big Pink House”. I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually, but right now it still kinda confuses me. (I’m easily confused these days anyway.)
I got my tonsils removed on Thursday and it’s the wooooooorst but my small army of kitties (plus hubby and kiddo) have been taking great care of me. Buttercup the Flüffenbeast even let me be big spoon during naptime yesterday. The BCN crew is right – it really does help to be the big spoon! https://64.media.tumblr.com/905e2dd6d059f093d4ab4c84a2f030e6/4be7d44fc4ce9ee4-e0/s2048x3072/46cde106592d5d1ca85704e12dc6d6346bef4862.jpg

I saw a vet recommendation to shine the dot on a treat after a bit. That way they have something to catch afterward.
All of my cats love(d) chasing the red/grey dot.
I still think that when under catnip’s influence they can see red. “Oh, wow! The colors!”
“Have you ever really looked at your paw?”
