He has to make sure the dramatic elements show up in the newspapers that don’t buy or print the colorised version.
So he makes things black so everyone can tell they’re a dark or bright color, and not white….
The colorist can’t change any of he cartoonist’s line-work, including solid black areas. He or she has to look for whatever’s still available to fill, and try to make it suggest color in the black parts…. it’s an art, literally.
