I have recently begun this practice – even though I didn’t know it was thing. I had been been going above and beyond with nothing to show for it. No more. When the boss is doing the minimum it take to keep me on (knowing I am too old to start over somewhere else) I will do the minimum it takes to prevent being fired.I still do the best job I am able, I take care of the customer when I am there. But call me after hours and you can leave a voicemail. Text me on the weekend? I will get back to you first thing Monday morning. You see, I screwed up and googled what my industry typically pays in my area and found out that with 20 years experience and being one of four people (out of a dozen) in my company with advanced licensing, I am being paid nearly at the entry level. Because money wasn’t my primary focus (beyond making enough to live on) I feel like my naivete was taken advantage of.These days, when the boss says, “I appreciate you” it sounds more like a taunt. The upside is when I become eligible for social security (which the boss is begging me to put off) I will feel no guilt whatsoever at jumping ship.
