“Getting all A’s doesn’t necessarily imply a student is smarter.”
That’s true, of course, but it’s a good place to start. I’m reminded of the “Calvin & Hobbes” where Calvin, in an attempt to justify his self-description as “Boy Genius” tells Hobbes “You know how Einstein got bad grades when he was in school? Well, MINE are even WORSE!”
Over my own school years I had excellent grades and abysmal grades over various stretches, and while my bad report cards weren’t indicative of my intellectual ability (one of the usages of “smarter”), they were a GREAT reflection on how well I actually knew the material (one of the OTHER usages of “smarter”).
