I remember hearing that it actually is dangerous for dogs to have their heads out the window in a moving car, as they could end up getting some debris in their face.
My dog saw a bird fly close and tried to dive out the window after it. I was driving, and just barely caught his tail in time. Since then I keep the window half up, so he can only get his head out.

Humane Society, says never allow dogs to do this they can fall out of the car or get debris thrown in their eyes.
