I’ve been reading Buckles ever since early 2017, and I must say that the comic instantly attracted me! The art-style, character dynamics, and weekly-ish stories were all so charming. I was saddened to see the comic end so soon, but seeing as how I was able to be involved in a fifth of its lifetime, I’m happy things ended the way they did, even though there wasn’t any big follow-up to it. Perhaps I’m a bit late to the party in saying that, considering the fact the strip ended well over a year and a half ago! I’m happy that David Gilbert’s comic made it here, as the strips that I thought would be lost to time are now being preserved here on Go Comics. Unlike its previous home, Go Comics is FREE to read, so…huzzah! Well, that’s my first comment here on Go Comics! Cheerio.
THAT being said, while I do enjoy seeing Buckles’s antics, it’s nice to see a strip where other characters get to shine. Take a look at Thomas the Tank Engine: Sure, seeing Thomas’s cheekiness in full-swing is entertaining, but it’s always nice to see other characters, like Duck, Gordon, or even the Narrow-Gauge Engines take the full spotlight. It wouldn’t end the world if Thomas was absent for a few minutes…though, Mattel doesn’t hold THAT belief to be true!
Anyway, it’s the same thing here: Sure, it’s fun to see Buckles show off his naive and mischievous sides, but it’s also entertaining to see Paul and Jill’s perspectives on their lives. After all, they DO raise Buckles into becoming the dog he is, and surely, they have guilty pleasures and desires they’d like to fulfill, even though they spend a lot of time and money raising the grey pup. (How old would you say Buckles is, hmm?)
And THAT said…man, I can relate to Paul here. Hands behind his back, looking dramatically out the window, speaking gravely, deeply contemplating himself getting a snow blower…deep down, he knows he doesn’t absolutely need it, but his heart’s telling him to get it at all costs…EVEN IF INVEST IN NFTS, BWAHAHAHAAAA!!! (Oh, wait, NFTs didn’t exist back then…)
