Based on what was shown in last week’s strip, this arc was tastefully done. Paul learns his lesson about prioritizing his loved ones over worldly wants. He makes up for his mistake by setting up his family’s old Christmas tree. Jill, on the other hand, is still hurt by Paul. She can’t find it in herself to share Paul’s sentiment. After having a genuine discussion with her about his feelings, Paul’s change of heart is on full display, and Jill, by the last panel, experiences the same.
This Christmas tree is not unlike the one my family has. Shortly after they got married over thirty years ago, my parents got a Christmas tree with separate branches, multiple layers, and a lengthy assembly process. Despite how many needles it loses every year, it still looks amazing. I help my mother put it together every year in one way or another. We string lights as we put on each layer. My mother often mentions getting a pre-assembled tree one year, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. She says she’ll let me have it when the time comes. :-)
In my family, the debate was over the topper. Mom’s family always had a star. Dad’s had an angel. Then they found a lighted topper of an angel standing in front of a star!
I don’t really understand why so many people prefer a live tree since it’s so inconvenient and only lasts for that year. We always had an artificial one. When I was a kid it was silver and my parents had one of those 4 color doohickies that turned so the tree appeared in each of the 4 colors. I always found it fascinating when I was a kid. Later we got a green tree and it’s not too difficult to put the branches in the right place or to take it down after Christmas and put it back in the attic. With the real ones you have to go out in the cold to some place that sells them and pick one, cut it down, or have them cut it down, load it onto the car or truck, bring it home and set it up, then afterward the poor thing is thrown out like trash. Give me the artificial one every time.
I’m not doing very well with the last few days on this fake tree deal . Sorry but I just love the expressions on Jill and the precious Buckles in the last panel thought , especially Buckles : )
At least this time, Paul was able to be more convincing in his case to Jill, compared to when he tried to convince her to get a big-screen TV to no success.

To a kid, a tree is a tree. They’re more excited for Santa to bring presents.
