I love panel 3 …LOL Hobbes’ face…
Reminds me of Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy. They often looked into the camera when they didn’t know what the other made acting so freaky :-)
Cleo, I wonder what you mean - no crime is a crime unless he is behind it - is he the super hero behind the criminal or is he the criminal behind the crime
When our son was 6, he decided he had to have a cape, so he could be a SuperHero! He got so into it, at one point, he even wanted his dad to have a cape too & be his sidekick! Taking it one step further than Calvin! :)
This strip reminds me of “The Cape” by the immortal Guy Clark. If you’re not familiar with it, you can check out a bootleg performance of it at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h32OxKofS1A
What young boy hasn’t enjoyed the “powers” provided by a simple cape?
Hobbes and mom know his secret identity at this point, but Hobbes wouldn’t tell anyone except for the aforementioned belly rub, or a tuna sandwich (tigers are suckers for tuna sandwiches.)
Despite this comic showing his appearance, this is NOT the first appearance of Stupendous Man.
There was another strip with him on top of a building thinking about whether he should take flight, with the air currents and such, and the last panel shows he was only on top of a slide.
They did mention Stupendous Man in the strip, so I
know what I’m talking about

Excellent question, Hobbes…
cleokaya about 15 years ago
Why? Because he is Calvin. No crime is a crime unless he is behind it. I love panel 2. The shadow knows.
Yukoner about 15 years ago
Hobbes, don’t you realize that the prophet is without honour in his own country.
Crumbucket about 15 years ago
Poor stuffed animal. He doesn’t know that once your identity is known it can be stolen. Happens all the time.
johnnydoc5 about 15 years ago
I’m with Cleo, he’d probably more on the supply side of crime than the demand for justice.
ladywolf17 about 15 years ago
Calvin! there is a crime in your bedroom.
And it’s all Hobbes fault! He messed up your room while looking for your comic books to read.
Flintstoned about 15 years ago
Hobbes, dosen’t quite grasp the superhero mystechic.
sjoujke about 15 years ago
Calvin likes hiding behind a cloak of anonimity.
Rakkav about 15 years ago
Folks, this is the very first appearance of Stupendous Man, fighter against tyranny, scourge of babysitters…
Let the whole civilized world rejoice! :))
margueritem about 15 years ago
sjoujke, I like your new avatar, too.
carmy about 15 years ago
Calvin looks like a chickenhawk in the 3rd panel.

Hobbes just ruined the moment for Calvin.
Rakkav about 15 years ago
That was more like a story plummet - it had nowhere to go but down. :))

You’ll have to go out and commit a crime…then you can come solve it… but I wouldn’t trust Hobbes to be the witness… he’d rat you out… for a belly rub
krisch about 15 years ago
Why Cal why? You dont even have a Mary Jane to protect.
Ivy0730Lcsq about 15 years ago
Cute cute cute outfit! Any you sorta look funny Calvin
Hankcock(2008)??? LOL

All these great Christmas avatars, and so hard to see. goComics has been studiously ignoring our requests for larger icons.

Calvin(Stupendus Man) is really asking, “What crime should I committ first?”
Hobbes is really saying, “Why bother, everyone will know it was you anyways”
LOL
pearlandpeach about 15 years ago
larger icons cost $$ - I would rather see the funds in color comics, not “our” id.
Love the Stupendus Man stories…they are the best.
randandready about 15 years ago
You can dress him up but you cant take him out. So he stirs his own primordial soup. What will Calvin be when he grows up?
chubbygirlcomics about 15 years ago
I’m kind of thinking that Stupendous Man could solve the crimes committed by mild-mannered Calvin.
GROG Premium Member about 15 years ago
He’ll likely have to bust himself.

I wonder what would happen if Stupendous Man of Calvin and Hobbes went up against Superlative Girl of 9 Chickweed Lane? :))
yyyguy about 15 years ago
it would probably be better than average!
aerwalt about 15 years ago
I often wonder what the stories would be like if Bruce Wayne was revealed as Batman. So he opened a consulting detective agency.

calvin should be able to recognize crime, after all take a look at his past.
crazygamer3596 about 15 years ago
calvin is a crime fighter and just wants to save the world from a big crimial.
coffeeturtle about 15 years ago
everyone knows you cant have a normal life and your family is in constant peril once your secret identity is known.
it’s in the superhero manual. :-D
bmonk about 15 years ago
Stupendous Man did have problems: with his babysitter, Rosalyn.
Aardvark359 about 15 years ago
It has long been my secret desire to retire and then travel from town to town in a VW microbus, doing good deeds and solving crimes.
Perhaps I watched a few too many Scooby-Doo episodes as a kid?
daphygirl about 15 years ago
He dosn’t want anyone to know his secret identity because it would spoil his reputation as a bratty kid and he would have to start being good.

Calvin fighting crime? Now THAT’S scary……

Calvin should apprehend himself for digging up the driveway, yesterday. After all, ‘the road…was paved with good intentions’.

Calvin has made himself known to the world…

Let’s hear it for Stupendous Man!
Wah-Hoo!
GROG Premium Member about 15 years ago
Thank you, Puddlegum2. Finally, someone who confirms what I said. Calvin should be at the top of his own most wanted list.
EdgarSkat about 15 years ago
I liked it!…
medamo about 15 years ago
Calvin said, “Look what Mom made me!” Way to go Mom! Yesterday dad sent Calvin outside with nothing to do and he dug up the driveway. Mom-1, Dad-0
