It’s easy to see that the game is a combination of croquet and hurdles (and maybe a little baseball-note the stick “home plate”). I think I’ll set it up and play it as well. Might even start a league and charge admission - lol.
One of my son’s board games was so complicated that we decided to scrap the directions and make up our own. We never wrote down what we decided they would be so everytime we’d start fresh. Things got so silly we’d end up rolling on the floor laughing. My son still says it’s the best game he’s ever played and can’t wait until my granddaughter gets a little older so he can play it with her.
Here is another stage in the development of Calvinball, one of the greatest inventions in the history of comic relief (right up there with the Schmoos, in my opinion).
Puddleglum2, Romeo and Juliet have the little play with the “holy palmers kiss” where they classically put their palms together as they talk about kissing with lips…almost as confusing to my freshmen as the rules to this game! But both of them understand the rules to THAT game!
I’m sprised the room cleaning thing endued after mom opened the closet & Calvin told her that her mess too clean up now. I think most of us would have gottten a good spanking from mom for a statment like that & then got another from dad when he got home.
Then we wwould have to cllean that mess. Then we would be grounded for quit a long ttime.
Half the fun of these incomprehensible favorite games is making up the rules as you play them: “No goal if you miss a wicket!” Think how much more fun cricket would be if the rules changed every time you played.
I often enjoy reading C & H in the morning while eating breakfast, even if the strips are from years ago. I also appreciate some of the short comments and one liners from some. Lately it appears some would like to change this forum into lessons in religion and language. There are other places to debate, and I was happy that this wasn’t one of them earlier. I’m simply looking for a little laugh and some light humor. I hope it goes back to the way it was before.
Some have to explain Watterson’s hidden meanings in his strips. Some have to relate the secret messages to real life. Maybe they didn’t have a childhood or regret wasting the one they did have. At least Calvin and Hobbes can live in the moment and enjoy it, in and of itself. The applications and pertinence can come years later.
@Florchi, Gotta know how you got/brought that old Fibber
Mc Gee & Molly video ?? Is Bill Watterson get his idea from
that old one for his script yesterday??
Please tell how you could possibly know about Fibber, you
were probably trying to still kick slats out of your cradle back
then/when ::-))
I agree with rogue53, et al.
puddleglum, we all know you’re brilliant and wise and clever and intellectual. Let us enjoy Calvin and Hobbes without the morning lectures, please.
Linda Arney,
Thank you for the info about Romeo and Juliet.
I looked it up anyway. I find the KJV Bible easier to understand than Shakepeare, although they were written in the same time period.

I never thought of croquet and cricket being related before….

There are many things that most of the people of this world will never understand, and in that there is something to decipher.

The true genius of childhood is that the game is whatever you want it to be and does not have to make sense to anyone else.
Go Calvin go.

Love the way Hobbes throws the ball with tongue sticking out sideways… usually when Calvin is writing down something his tongue sticks out sideways…

Croquette, cricket, and unless I’m mistaken there’s about to be a little tackle football. Hey, I think we’ve played that game!

How, pray tell HOW do they bend the wickets? How did the ball get to window height? Where is the fourth mallet? No, don’t tell me.
