My son never destroyed the house but he went through a how do things work stage. He took apart alot of clocks which made it fun to get up in the morning and many of his electronic toys. I could never throw anything mechanical away because he wanted to disect it. I had to be careful with the vacuum cleaner because there was always little screws and gears all over the floor.
DINO The time Dad came home after I had put practically all the parts back in Grandpa’s pocket watch (extra parts for people who don’t know what they’re doing), he gave me a book, not a whooping.”How Things Work” was informative, but I still prefer hands on. My mother and my significant still cringe when they see me with a tool box. Matter of fact, I don’t think my mother would let me in her house if I had a screwdriver.
When I was Calvin’s age, all such experiments were ultimately destructive. By the time I was 12 I’d figured out how to take things apart in such a way that they could be reassembled successfully.
At 14 my folks had me replace the transmission in the washing machine.
The moral is, don’t discourage the enquiry, but try to save the house.
When will dad ever learn to lock up all of his tools in a place where Calvin can’t get to them?! And if he can’t – or won’t – then why doesn’t mom do it since she’s the only one that appears to do any of the home’s maintenance around there … and probably a majority of that maintenance is fixing what Calvin destroys?!?!?
Easy way to deal with kids like Calvin is to lock up the car and the garage, and then lock him out of the house, and, of course, no access to anything with a sharp point on it. My dad was the shooting Editor for Field & Stream - we had enough firearms and ammo in the basement to allow Westchester county to secede from the US. Hate to think what a kid like Calvin might have done with a situation like that….yoiks….

Mom should ‘drill’ it into Calvin how to use that tool properly. He doesn’t know ‘a bit and brace’ from a hole in the wall.
Puddleglum2 about 14 years ago
I thought Mom had ‘painted herself into a corner’, but apparently not. Calvin can’t escape, so he might as well slow down ‘a bit and brace’ himself.
