Mrs Wormwood does know who she is dealing with. Otherwise it would have been Child Services at the door! He’s in for a backfire with this plan… lil’ devil
Nothing like that happened at my house, but my parents made sure I knew when I did something wrong-just standard things like belts to my rear, soap in my mouth, and not letting me watch TV or play video games for certain amount of time.
This strip is a throwback to bygone days. In this new millennium, Mom and Dad could have just duct taped Calvin to a chair…. of course, he wouldn’t have had his hands free to write his essay…..
The best and brightest kids can be such stinkers! So hard to civilize.
I knew a very bright man who had to go into a Psych ward for his mental problems. He knew enough to run rings around the docs–but was just sane enough to know that he really needed their help, and so cooperated. He said that a lot of the projects and activities were really juvenile–but he did them.
I believe Ms. Wormwood knows Calvin well and so does the principle.
I heard from the school when my son was small he used class time to draw a picture the school thought was bad instead of class assignment. He got in trouble for it. Typical boy.
I think I love Calvin so much because he reminds me of my son. He pulled this same stunt when he was in 5th grade. He wrote an essay about home life that included bugs in his bedroom along with many other colorful descriptors. He made it sound like we lived in an abandoned building! Talk about embarrassing. I was so mad at him! It’s funny how all these years later….it’s really kinda funny.
Keep up the great work Calvin, I love it! Your moms gonna kill you and so is your dad! I have loved this comic since the very first day it was first shown and still love reading them. They are so funny! Bill Watterson is a Genius!
I haven’t read the other comments yet, but I think in our present times, the family services would be on the doorstep to rescue Calvin and check things out thanks to a call from the school….unless the teacher is well aware of Calvin’s imagination.
Calvin’s brilliance as a lawyer/politician coming to the fore once more. This one really gave me a laugh. I can just see Calvin’s father, after the meeting, asking his wife if she was absolutely sure that he was the father of Calvin. And for dinner? Fireworks, of course….
That’s just the best ever! It’s like when you’re in the store and your kid gets made at you because you won’t buy him a toy or take him somewhere after shopping and starts screaming, “Ow, stop hitting me, you’re always beating me, help!’ or my personal favorite, “Stop touching me, help, you’re not my mother, help, somebody get a policeman!”
Thankfully the teacher knows Calvin’s full of it up to his eyeballs; otherwise, Children’s Social Services would be standing on their doorstep checking things out … constantly!!!
Meanwhile ~~~
Even if Calvin really were chained up in his basement with the rats fighting over the meat, his spirit would still be free … and laying in bed laughing his rear-end off, I’m sure!!!!!
Calvin always was and will be the best comic strip in existence. I always made a b-line for the newspaper during ‘study hall’ back in high school just so I could read the newest Calvin and Hobbes strip.
His imagination; incredible, his sarcasm, a complete riot; and his Dad was always giving him plenty of opportunities to ‘build character’ which obviously vastly increased his adorable yet slightly warped personality.
Calvin; a real kid in America today, or perhaps a child possessing a mere 15%-30% of Calviness, simply would not exist. At 6 months old, he would’ve been mis-diagnosed with ADHD, multiply personalities, accused of being unable to recognize authority, extremely rebellious, etc. They’d shove all sorts of medication into him, find someone to blame for his ‘behavior and lock them up, then destroy what was once a happy child with years of ‘therapy’.
We’re all lucky he was created before the “Psychiatrists for Perpetually Prescribing People Pills” invaded our world!

How about it, Hobbes? Can you smuggle us a copy?

Why deny it? You really think Ms. Wormwood hasn’t thought of it herself? She may just want to discuss which type of padlock is most secure.

Yes rogue53, if chains work at home maybe they will work at school. But alas, it is all a fantasy as nothing can restrain Calvin.
