If there are repercussions for mom’s phone call, they won’t be felt by mom, but rather by Calvin. It’s somewhat like giving someone advice, but not having to live with the consequences of following it. The good old, “If I were you, I’d….” blah blah blah. I’m sure there will be plenty of psycho-analysis from this strip today….. Let er rip!
The bully bloodied my nose. The school said “It takes two to fight” and suspended us both. We no longer fought each other, we fought authority. The enemy of my enemy ……….
My mother said the same thing, and it didn’t work for me either. In fact, the one worst bully only hated me the more for not giving him the reaction he wanted, so he tormented me more than anyone else.
My husband’s cousin was told by her mother to “hit him back.” So the next time the bully hit her, she grabbed him and slammed him against the wall. He never bothered her again. The problem is, you can’t exactly do that with somebody bigger than you.
I don’t know if our grandson was bullied or not. Certainly his behavior made a dramatic change. He attempted suicide once, didn’t get the support he needed, and successfully hung himself the last day of school last year. Let’s all remember that bullying can lead to suicide and open up the channels of communication that victims so need. Calvin, your mom is on the right track
Please cite your source or legislative documentation. I find it difficult to believe you expect anyone to believe this as stated. You’re saying the legislators voted to allow bullying as long as it’s based on religious or moral grounds? Get real. “I wouldn’t punch you, but it’s my religion, sorry.” LOL
I’m very curious about Bill Watterson. When he sat his pen down it was ovr issues with the news papers. The internet wasn’t a viable way to self publish yet. I bet if he returned now he could do it his own way all the way
I was the victim of bulling when I was in school … the boy had been my friend when we were younger then decided, for some reason, that I should be the target of his anger. Never knew why … its been over fifty years and I still feel a measure of pain.
My dad said kick ‘em in the jewels then run! Never did though. I was 6 foot tall at the end of 6th grade so never had too much issues there. Still picked on for that but it didn’t last long. Pain is a great equalizer. Then I got these forearms from eatin’ me spinach! gnug gnug gnug.
The strips may be 20 years old but, the issues are still current !!La plus ca change; la plus le meme chose (The more things change; the more they stay the same).
Bullying was a problem on the school bus – bully would hit first, then the driver would see only the response. Result; Victim punished. (Seattle trying to do same – fine property owners if graffiti isn’t removed in a set time)
It appears that bullying is a hot topic judging by the number of comments on this strip. MAD magazine had a “lighter side of bullying one time.” As i recall it, Big Jake bullied one kid by making him eat grass. Then a bigger guy comes by, and says “Big Jake — I’m tired of you bullying everyone – you get down and yiou eat grass!” Victim flees, back to his college dorm and room mates tell him to be careful – Big Jake is looking for you! “I know – we just had lunch together!” Anyone still have a copy of this?
Calvin is right,Mom put the phone down.Talk to the teacher, they can catch Moe in the act, will help in the school yard but you still got to get him to school, but Moe’s small brain will want revenge. if he thinks Calvin turned him in.wheres Susie?
Absolutely love the phone. So far as I know, the people who bought my parent’s house in Chappaqua still have the same phone number as we did, so that’s the same number for well over 60 years…how’s that for consistency?
Things haven’t changed very much. _FYI – Calling people morons is yet another form of bulling by demeaning … and to top it off, you know nothing about us.
I can fully understand Calvin. I was in the third grade when a bully began tormenting me. He was in the fifth grade and much bigger than I was. When Mom finallly got me to tell her what my problem was, she did what Calvin’s mom is doing. I neveer saw that bully again.
Meanwhile, this just goes to show that Calvin’s mom really does love her son! Calling the school to report Moe’s bullying won’t do any good (if anything, it’ll more than likely escalate the bullying on Moe’s part to get back at Calvin for “squealing” on him) . . . but I give her props for at least trying to do something to end the tormenting of her child while he’s at school where he’s supposed to be safe from harm while he’s there. Good for her!!!!!
This strip must have set a record for comments. Interesingly, I’ve heard (or read) that in polls done at schools, the kids that were noted to be bullies, reported they also had bullies.
He should have given her a picture. That way she will have something to remember what he used to look like, once Moe is done with him.
Not all bullying is done on the school grounds. Sometimes the bully prefers to wait till after school to catch the victim unawares. Bullies are often the children of bullies in the home.
The granddaughter told her story to grandma. Grandma went and had a little talk to the bully – it was over. I don’t know what was said, but i don’t cross the old lady, that kid was smart not to, either.
Also, although the comments are no more, I believe we did once get 1300 comments over a weekend at Pibgorn. And daily totals were routinely in the 200-400 range.
But Big Top could give a run for the money, and Calvin was often no. 3.
@Dogsniff: In response to your comment about Luann on Saturday, I made a rare exception and commented on Luann on Saturday. I think I was about comment #215 out of 358. I managed to get a humorous response from one poster.
Nabuquduriuzhur I agree with you. That’s exactly what happened when I was a kid. Our principal always said things like “it takes two to tango” and “they’re both guilty”.
This is actually a very sad truth. If the sort of treatment that bullies use was used by adults, it would be called harassment and dealt with properly.
Parents of bullies are often bullies themselves and THEIR victims are the administrators and teachers who try to rein-in their children’s uncivilized behavior. Often they pull the race card which usually trumps every other card in the deck. Our child and our nation suffers.
