Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for November 29, 2014
Transcript:
Calvin: " Do you think tigers go to the same heaven that people go to?" Calvin: "I mean, in heaven, everyone is supposed to be HAPPY, right? But people wouldn't be happy if they were always in danger of being eaten by tigers!" Calvin: "On the other hand, heaven wouldn't be very nice WITHOUT tigers, either. I wouldn't be happy if there weren't any tigers. I'd miss them" Calvin: "Maybe tigers just don't eat people in heaven" Hobbes: "But then WE wouldn't be happy"

Hobbes will just have to settle for a tuna sandwich in heaven.

Tigers must eat plants, or in heaven we all sing only “hallelujah” and don’t need to eat!!

Generations of scholars disput that question.

Hopping the beer isn’t the fancy stuff from these-days: I enjoy a good old fashioned redneck tomato-beer (icy cold)… and maybe some chislic??

Catch-22
phineas81707 about 10 years ago
The very paradox that makes a perfect world impossible: a world free from crime, where people can do as they wish. The wish to be able to do crime makes one of these statements false.

To paraphrase the Holy Bible: ’ Lambs will lie with lions . . . .’

Eating is one of life’s two great pleasures. No one should have to give it up if there is a Heaven, any more than they should have to give up the other one. If there are no pleasures in Heaven, then what’s the point? ShadowBeast said that things would have to materialize from nothing. Absolutely. If God is all powerful, then (s)he can surely create food from “scratch”, as it were.

The lion will lay down with the lamb, the young child will play near the vipers’ nest – crack open a Bible sometime…

I have a strong suspicion that when that electro-chemical process we call life ceases that’s the end of things. Don’t worry about a mystical place that has no real proof of its existence.

If the tigers in Heaven are fed enough, then they won’t want to eat people.

I don’t believe in Heaven, Hell or God, but as I do enjoy fantasy, science fiction and the comics, herewith a few thoughts:
This strip reminds me of a “Dear Abby” letter; a woman wrote that she was concerned about going to Heaven because she didn’t want to have to spend all eternity with her relatives. Talk about your conflict between Heaven and Hell! Abby advised her to talk to her minister about her worries, and had no doubt that God had the problem resolved.
Then there’s the Rod Serling story, “Pamela’s Voice” (dramatized on “Night Gallery” by John Astin and Phyllis Diller). According to that tale, Heaven can be whatever you want it to be. Hell, on the other hand . . .
The Swamp Thing story, “Love and Death” posited a view of God and the afterlife that I found to my liking: God and Heaven having many aspects and facets, as many as there are people, essentially, and Hell (and being damned to go there) as a creation of our own evils, and not as a punishment/judgement center created by God.
But my preferred belief is what I call the Sherman-Hepburn philosophy (citations to follow, if anyone’s interested; gotta wrap this up): one life is all we get, and at the end we go into the ground and we rot!

When I was little, I often wondered if there were 2 separate heavens. One for humans and one for animals.xxx

And the lion (tiger) will lay down with the lamb (Calvin) and the little child (Calvin?) shall lead them (oh no…)
Number Three about 10 years ago
I have no doubt about that.

I was talking general paradise and utopia, not Heaven in particular.

Beer is gross and bad for you. You might as well eat a destroying angel (a very poisonous mushroom).

Genesis 1:30 says: “…and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food.”
So it seems that plants are not alive. (Although one verse is hardly concluisive.)
