Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for March 16, 2015
March 15, 2015

Transcript:
Hobbes: "Whatcha doin'?"
Calvin: "Looking for frogs"
Hobbes: "How come?"
Calvin: "I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul"
Hobbes: "Ah. But of course"
Calvin: "My mandate also includes weird bugs"
“inscrutable exhortations of my soul.” Wow. If some lying SOS, er, I mean politician, hasn’t used that as a cover story yet, it will happen soon. They already claim mandates every time their gerrymandered district rubber-stamps another term at the trough,or rather, “in office.”
Calvin is a typical six year old boy who seeks adventure wherever he can find it, just like most six year olds. But his vocabulary, that’s something else.
I bought my son every C & H book I could find, back in the day. He hated to read but loved the comic strip. I figured they had better vocabulary than a lot of kids books. He still has them all, and now my grandchildren read them.
“Calvin’s vocabulary puzzles some readers, but Calvin has never been a literal six-year-old. Cumbersome words are funny to me, and I like Calvin’s ability to precisely articulate stupid ideas.”
My grandson is 6, and is Calvin incarnate. I’m living vicariously through him, I think. He’s a clever kid, and never ceases to amaze me. Of course, he gets away with almost anything when he visits.
Anyone here ever watch Bones? Maybe he’ll get a PHD in Entomology & use his mandate to study corpse eating bugs. Frogs are one of my favorite animals too. So are turtles, penguins & lots of others.

Your soul isn’t exhorting you to do your homework or clean your room?

@leftwingpatriot: Have you ever known an eight year old boy whose soul exhorted him to those things?

That’s my motto too. Except that my mandate usually includes oddly-behaving birds…

This child needs to start using words that people don’t have to look up in the dictionary later. Haha

With Calvin’s inordinate grasp of the English language, I’m surprised he isn’t a member of Mensa…

Snakes and snails and puppy-dog’s tails … that was me too, nearly seven decades ago, and every summer in the garden.

“Inscrutable exhortations of my soul” sounds like it ought to be a famous quote, but my googling only brought me back to Calvin and Hobbes.
So, I guess it is a famous quote, now.

Maybe Calvin will grow up to be a sociologist in the jungles of New York City! There are lots of weird specimens there, also.
