A favorite “trick” question of mine: What is the lightest naturally occurring and commonly known crystalline mineral substance? Ice, of course. It’s essentially unique in that the solid phase of water is less dense than the liquid phase. That fact is also the fundamental reason why large bodies of liquid water and thus our current climate, and indeed life itself, can exist on this planet!

You’ll learn not to ask Dad for one.

This reminds me of the strips when Calvin asks his Dad about Black and White Movies/Pictures.

I know a guy like Dad—he may not know the answer but he’ll make something up and try to make it sound convincing. He’s a retired physicist who claims to have worked for NASA; in reality he worked for one of their subcontractors.

Did anyone mention that Dad has taught Calvin a good lesson?It is a greater gift to teach someone to fish than to give him a fish…or something like that..it’s getting late here!

Dad’s one smart guy. Gave his kid an answer just wrong enough to make Calvin suspicious. Now Calvin will go do what he was supposed to do in the first place – look it up.

For some reason toehold TV show Father Knows Best came to mind. I wonder why.

Dad would do Calvin a lot more good if he would be honest and admit he doesn’t know. Mom needs to give Dad a smack upside the head.

That is incorrect. The mass of water that a boat displaces is equal to the mass of the boat. Also the effective density of a boat IS less dense than water. That’s why it floats. The effective density is the total mass of the boat divided by its total volume, which includes a large volume of air. This is the same reason why hot air or helium balloons float in air. They are less dense than air.

Cream is less dense than milk. That’s why it’s skimmed off the top.

The Brits had plans for a giant aircraft carrier during WW2, made of ice and sawdust,. HMS Habbakuk, that could carry land based bombers, but it was not built.

The level of the lake rose when they put the boat (with anchor) into the water, and when they got into the boat. When the jumped out of the boat, or dropped anchor, the level of the lake stayed the same, of course, but the boat rose. ;)

When I was a kid (about a hundred years ago), my Dad would answer those kind of “why” questions with “Just to make little boys like you ask questions!”

Back when I was in high school in the 70’s there was a science or chemistry magazine that had a science fiction story about people finding a way to make ice that sinks instead of floating. After more than 40 years, I can’t remember the title or the whole story. I think what happened was that this had been discovered on a different planet, and it resulted in all the water on the planet ending up being permanently frozen, ending all life on that planet. But I do remember it ending with the scientist seeing an advertisement for a product here that could make ice cubes sink instead of float!

Holy cow! I thought I was just reading Calvin and Hobbes; I had no idea I was going to sit in on some science classes.

I need some more coffee…

OK, I’ll take a shot:1. To separate unhomogenized milk, let it sit and skim the cream. Milk should therefore be the denser of the two.2. Trick question because of the word “swim” implying effort to stay on the surface. If they’re motionless and floating, the water level stays the same, since they’re displacing the same volume of water they were while in the boat. If they’re natural “sinkers” (as some people are), they’re displacing less than their weight in water and the water level will drop slightly when they exit the boat and sink.3. Same as number 2 — the boat displaces the anchor’s weight with the anchor on board; when tossed overboard, the anchor displaces less than its weight, so the water level of the lake decreases slightly.Can easily be tested with a bowl of water, a small toy boat or something similar, and a handful of coins.
