Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for September 03, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "There aren't many heroes these days" Calvin: "Who is out there to inspire us with a personal example of virtue and self-sacrifice in the name of higher good?" Calvin: "Who can we look up to? Business leaders? Sports figures? Politicians? Celebrities? Heck, we're lucky if they don't end up in prison! Hobbes: "Fortunately, if we can't get inspiration, we'll accept entertainment" Calvin: "As usual, the hero business is up to me"
Bill Watterson inspired some of us by not commercializing Calvin and Hobbes and thereby turning down a lot of personal gain. Wish he could have made one exception, however, by making a stuffed Hobbes available for kids to enjoy. While I greatly respect Bill for standing by his principles and making a big personal sacrifice that few of us would ever consider, I would respect him even more if he could have brought pleasure to children in this one way. Perhaps he could have donated the proceeds to a children’s hospital. Bill made the decision against commercialization when he was still quite young. As we grow older, we understand more and more that few things in this world are completely black and white. Even comic strips have shades of gray.
