Hobbes would’ve done something to defend Calvin, but he knows where the money that buys the tuna comes from.

So do the stars in the last panel mean Calvin was spanked?

To this day, we still don’t know for sure – if Hobbes is just a toy, how the heck did Calvin get tied up?!?

Calvin knows it’s his fault, and he knows that he lied about Hobbes. Especially the ransom part. He definitely feels guilty about it.

There was a strip where Mom got herself all fancied up to go out, and was in a hurry…… Calvin thought it would be funny to put a bucket of water over the front door so it would soak somebody going out……….. ANNNNNNNND it got Mom, big time. The final panel showed C walking away rubbing his rear, with stars around it……….. thinking to himself “Sheeesh, what a grouch!”. That was the only other time I can remember him ever getting spanked (if that is what happened here).

Be careful Calvin doesn’t beat the stuffing out of you, Hobbes.

This is where we know Hobbes is not entirely in Calvin’s imagination.
