She has two choices. She can start buying Captain Napalm bubble gum and become a trading buddy with Calvin. Or she can keep her sanity.

Save those cards! By the time you’re your Dad’s age they might be worth a fortune.

when i was a kid we traded cards that were designed for trading but were actually playing cards without the numbers… so we had all sorts of catagories in a shoebox lol: dogs, horses, ladies in pretty dresses, men in great outfits, cats, landscapes, flowers and etc. and at every recess we would take our shoeboxes outside to the bench and trade :D we also had a catagory that was real playing cards with unique backs! very valuable! This was around 1955.

In the early 60’s the gum in baseball card packs ( 5 cards/1 flat gum stick-$.05) was usually stale and we would just throw it away.

And Calvin became an expert on bubble gum in the process. Even gets Chewing magazine.

IT IS CALVIN! That’s why I collect pictures of bathtub rings. Sadly no one seems to have many anymore. Even producing them seems harder. SMH – life just gets harder and harder as you get older in the collection of anything.

I collected Terminator trading cards back when Terminator was new and shiny. I got them all. I think they are worth less now than when I bought them.

I had a short bubble-gum card collecting phase. The only thing I really remember about it was when this kid showed us that he had the ultra-rare Babe Ruth card. He was offered crazy amounts of cards for it, but he wouldn’t go for any of the offers…

Let me guess. Susie will buy a single pack of cards, get both that Calvin wants, not trade with a desperate Calvin, and then just toss the pack away.

LOL.. Cap’n Napalm cards. Typical little boy.

My mom could never understand why as a kid back in the ’50’s and 60’s I spent every extra penny on baseball cards. but she became a believer when in the mid 70’s I started selling them and put my sister and then both my brothers through college. She later told my sister she regretted throwing out my old comic books when I was overseas.

Captain Napalm has been mentioned before. In the story arc where Calvin had a bee on him and was afraid to move, Hobbes walked back to their home and got a Captain Napalm comic that Calvin hadn’t read yet and started reading it to Calvin who told him not to read any more but let him read it himself:

Hobbes: I’ll give you a hint. Captain Napalm takes his nuclear…

Calvin: No hints! No hints!

It sure would be nice if a generation could grow up without knowing what “napalm” is.

I collected baseball cards and comics when I was a kid. (And all of Gary Larson’s books.)

Then there’s George Carlin’s ‘difference between baseball and football’. Hysterical.

Since Halloween is coming up, they could go trick or treating together. Calvin could go as Captain Napalm, and Susie can wear a leotard and go as Amazon Babe!

Oy! I used to have hundreds of trading cards….wish I had kept them…memories!

Some kids aren’t into trading cards, Calvin, they have other interests…

‘Captain Napalm’ – says it all for me. Not the least bit interested, Calvin! And I sure wouldn’t spend any money on trading cards. lol

I remember the days of collecting NHL cards in elementary school with the other guys. I wonder if my big card binder is still around somewhere…

I’ve never seen a bubble gum card in my life. The locally sold gum brands just don’t offer ’em.

Besides Susie, does Calvin have any friends? Or any kids whose name he actually knows?

Susie has a 1967 Topps Mickey Mantle that her grandfather gave her. It’s in the safe deposit box for her college fund.

Baseball is too slow! I don’t understand all the obscure details.

I do not follow sports and do not collect baseball cards.

You know the conventional wisdom about girls maturing faster than boys? This strip proves as much.
