I like sick humor. For me, I look for it to be at least cerebral. George Carlin and Emo Philips spring to mind for me. Hell, even Louis C.K. (despite his self imposed fall from grace) had a spark of it.

Today’s strip fits in well with yesterday’s Sunday strip. At the end of yesterday’s strip, Hobbes said of Calvin, “Landed in the prickly bushes just like yesterday.” Calvin called back to him, “Maybe my luck will change tomorrow.” Today, Hobbes was unable to jump to safety unlike in yesterday’s strip. Both Calvin and Hobbes hit a hard surface today.

Perhaps this is Watterson’s nod to the multi-verse. Yesterday, Hobbs made a different choice resulting in a different outcome.

I would say this world is terrifying to people who don’t live here. That is why the Alpha Centaurians lock the doors of their spacecraft when they have to travel through our solar system.

Earth; Third planet from a minor star in a backwater solar system of the Milky Way galaxy, frequently called “The World” by inhabitants. Nice enough place to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there.

I often imagine that I am a boy or girl or whatever scout from the planet Zarg who wants to earn a merit badge in primitive cultures so I came to this piece of debris orbiting a middle aged, yellow d-w-a-r-f star.

My first impression was that there are no highly intelligent species on the planet, so I looked at l-o-w-e-r lifeforms. Certain creatures that you call insects have highly involved societies that work very well together. Then there are f-u-n-n-y creatures in your seas with 8 (to use your number system) legs. They are also very intelligent and f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e too.

You have air breathing creatures in your seas that also have organized societies and even speech which is quite interesting even though nobody else on your planet seems to understand it.

I decided that I would settle on the technological beings: a bipedal species that your documents call h-o-m-o s-a-p-i-e-n-s. The main reason for this is that this species actually documents what it does. I don’t know why. If I acted the way you do, I’d be ashamed to admit it.

When I look at your culture from the outside, I see that it is both tragic and comic at the same time. Most of the things you take as sacred are arbitrary.

One of the things that confuse this scout is all the infighting. You all look the same to me. There are some minor, trivial differences, but you are more than 99% the same. Even though I am only 12 Zargian years old, I can see that you have much more to gain by cooperating with each other than fighting each other.

S-i-l-l-y Oblivions (our name for your planet is Oblivious).

    P. S. I hope Google Translate did a good job with this.

Note the word s-p-i-c-e-s is apparently a banned word. Tough luck to anyone who wants to talk about cooking.
